Royal Hello for Dents

Queen Elizabeth Coronation Glove

Dents joined other top fashion leaders at a recent reception held at Buckingham Palace in the presence of HM the Queen and HRH the Duke of Edinburgh.

The evening was a celebration of the British clothing industry and was attended by some of Britain’s most famous fashion names including Twiggy, Vogue editor Alexandra Shulman, photographer David Bailey, Jeff Banks, Zandra Rhodes and Elizabeth and David Emanuel.

John Roberts, who was representing Dents, talked to HM the Queen about modern design and also about Dents’ long involvement with the British royal family – Dents' famous gloves date back to 1777 and Dents made the official Coronation Glove for both HM Queen Elizabeth and also her father King George VI.

John says it was a very relaxed event and it highlighted the talent and strength of the fashion industry here in Britain.

IT’S ALL KNITTING TOGETHER FOR OUR MEDIA DAY

knit 1

We are now busy planning the official media launch of the new Dents Autumn Winter Collections for 2010.

Interest in the new Collection is especially high this year. In difficult economic times accessories knit 2always become a major item, you can change the look of an entire outfit by adding a fresh new bag, scarf, hat or gloves, and fashion editors recognise this.

From the journalists, there has been a high level of early interest in the colourful soft knits in our collection. One editor told me that she always associated Dents with beautiful leathers, and she is right of course, the mainstay of the newknit 3 collection is based on wonderful leather handbags and gloves. But the importance of interesting new fabrics and knits is increasing every year, and for autumn and winter 2010 Dents has the best and brightest collection of knitted items: chunky knits in deep colours, delicate yarns in soft shades – lambswool, cashmere, angora, chenille. I love the intricate patterns that are achieved today and also the incredible softness of the new polar fleeces. I just hope we have another cold winter next year so that we all have lots of opportunities to wear these great new knits.

bow tied

Now I’m not usually a girly girl, but I cannot seem to get away from all the bows currently tying up the high street! There are just so many choices to choose from – whether it is a graphic bow printed jersey t-shirt, to a chic bow trimmed shift dress or pumps trimmedbows4 with a large patent bow.

Bows highlight the charm of the current vintage/feminine trend. These bows are not to be discreet – the bolder the better! Strong black bow details contrast with the muted pastel tones of blush pink and soft cream to update the delicate look by adding a tougher modern edge.

Bows are big news – be sure to invest soon!  Now to decide where to wear today’s bow… in my hair, on my shirt or my shoe!

Glover by Jo Lawrence

Here's more on Jo Lawrence's film "Glover", inspired in part by her visit to Dents' factory in Warminster. The film itself may be seen atmaking glover

http://www.vimeo.com/9405952

Jo Lawrence was Digital Media Resident at the V&A between July and December 2008. During her residency Jo used the V&A collections as inspiration for her work.

Glover is a glove maker whose story is told in a stop-frame animation. Glover's story was inspired by the fusion of two sources of inspiration from the V&A's vast collection: a reproduction of the Ebstorf Map and a pair of ornate leather and satin gloves (1600).

The Ebstorf map is a representation of the medieval view of the world in 1300. It appears to introduce a fourth continent on the periphery, Terra Incognita, the unknown world, inhabited by imaginary creatures, such as gigantipedes, monopods and nose-less men.

Similarly the 'glovecreatures' in Glover's interior world are a departure from the familiar, known and safe world of his workshop. Glover's journey takes him to the furthest reaches of his imagination, Terra Chirotheca , or Gloveland. It is a place of both horror and delight, where he meets a series of strange hybrids that are part beast or human and part glove.

Glover has been shortlisted for the Short Film category of the British Animation Awards 2010, and selected for the Public Choice Award. It will be screened at 27 venues across the UK during 2010.
