In a recent Daily Telegraph article, Madonna was featured in a story about how women aged 50 plus are faring best in this recession, having landed the most jobs, and having set up the most businesses, according to a report by the Chartered Institute of Personnel & Development. Great news for our typical Dents customer then, who will have more spare change to invest in Dents pieces!
This economic group, dubbed the “Madonna Generation”, is not only upping its game in its determination to get a job, but also branching out into less stereotyped female jobs such as those in technical fields, or managerial roles…. One small step for mankind, one giant leap for feminism!
Or could it just be that this generation of strong women is the most demanding in what they expect from themselves? Nowadays, more and more women of a mature age seen in the press have the figure and youthful complexion of women 10 years their junior. Look at the likes of Susan Sarandon, Helen Mirren (both of whom are over 60), and Michelle Pfeiffer. However, it’s not all just down to the way you look – often how you dress has as much, if not more, of an impact.
Madonna herself was shown in the Telegraph feature in a picture from her W.E. Premiere at the Odeon Kensington in January, wearing a stunning Dsquared dress with an equally beautiful Dolce & Gabbana cape – paired with a pair of red fingerless leather gloves! Just goes to show that what you wear can reflect the forward thinking person you are… I doubt we will see her Madjesty in a Marks & Spencer cardigan anytime soon. In fact, she is a lover of fingerless leather gloves, having worn a Chanel pair in a surprise appearance on stage in Miami in March.

Fingerless gloves, though quirky, have many practical uses… once seen as not cool, they’re now-cool. They are becoming a celeb craze all of sudden. Stars and fashion icons alike, such as Rihanna and Lady Gaga, are often seen wearing them.
The celeb following sees sales on the up for the Dents fingerless variety or ‘glovelettes’ as they are nicknamed, with the Dents Faux Suede Fingerless Glove (£16) as one of this year’s best sellers !
Now for the science bit! Fingerless gloves combine the full tactile sensitivity of bare fingers with warmth and protection for the rest of the hand. They are a very common accessory in driving (cut Off Driving Gloves , £45)
cycling, sailing, and many other activities that aren’t as healthy for your well-being, such as smoking. Some people find they allow computer typing or phone texting while reducing painful symptoms of arthritis, tendinitis and carpal-tunnel syndrome. They are also preferred by many for mixed martial arts, giving the knuckle the protection that boxing gloves do, while still allowing the finger freedom that grappling requires. They’ve picked up popularity on college campuses, where libraries need to keep their cool for the preservation of books (or maybe it’s just hard to heat a room that big, ha-ha), yet students still need finger dexterity in order to type on computers. They are now a popular glove for women and men (Cut Off Men’s Finger Driving Gloves , £40), and not just because it’s easier to use your iPhone. Leisure or practicality is usually a man’s reason for wearing them, but for women, what was once seen as a scruffy wool knit glove, is becoming a glamorous social accessory when made from soft leather with cut outs and bows, which allow you to show off your perfect pillar box red painted talons, while taking sips from your glass of mulled wine.
Spotted!
Alesha Dixon, judge from Strictly Come Dancing, has been snapped wearing our gorgeous gloves (last Saturday, 24th September, Fabulous magazine, Sun newspapers). As a huge Strictly fan, I was very pleased to spot them.
Strictly Come Dancing starts this evening on BBC1 and I will be glued to the TV. Do not call me tonight – my phone will be turned off!

Dents long leather gloves
The fashion business is such a small world. Years ago I did some great photo shoots with David Bailey, and I remember hearing about this iconic photographer’s background. He had been brought up in the east end, and, during World War II when he was three years old, his house was bombed and destroyed. With Terence Donovan and Brian Duffy, he was one of the top photographers who were responsible for portraying the “swinging” aspects of the 1960s, and he has been shooting amazing photographs ever since. This week we had a phone call asking for some of our lovely long black leather gloves for a photo shoot David is doing for GQ Magazine. Along with David, these gloves just go on and on being a top fashion favourite! The gloves appear in so many fashion photographs, they add such elegance and statement to a huge range of different outfits. Interestingly, many of the models have problems getting them on because they are not used to wearing long gloves. You really do need to roll them back and insert the hand and fingers first. Only when the fingers are properly fitted should you start gently easing the rest of the glove down the arm. I know David will do an amazing job photographing them and I can’t wait to see the results.
“See, how she leans her cheek upon her hand!
O that I were a glove upon that hand,
That I might touch her cheek!”
Gloves have always had a special appeal – I mean, would Shakespeare ever have written those words about a pair of socks? Even the word itself, “love”, with a “g” in front, speaks to our deepest emotion. And as the cold weather approaches and our thoughts inevitably turn to our gloves, and whether or not the time has come for a new pair, let’s take a couple of moments to reflect on a couple of famous glove wearers of recent times who have added to the fame (or notoriety) of this most iconic accessory.
There was Madonna, back in the eighties, with her fingerless fishnet gloves, who showed the way toLady Gaga. On the gentlemen’s side, we have Michael Jackson, who, in addition to his other talents, surely became the greatest glove salesman ever when his famous white glove (worn in his first Moonwalk dance in 1983) sold for $350,000 at auction in New York in November 2009. And what about OJ Simpson, who was never able to find a pair of gloves to fit, even if they were his own? If you have your own favourite glove wearer, just click on the title to this blog and tell us about him or her in the comments.
Dents joined other top fashion leaders at a recent reception held at Buckingham Palace in the presence of HM the Queen and HRH the Duke of Edinburgh.
The evening was a celebration of the British clothing industry and was attended by some of Britain’s most famous fashion names including Twiggy, Vogue editor Alexandra Shulman, photographer David Bailey, Jeff Banks, Zandra Rhodes and Elizabeth and David Emanuel.
John Roberts, who was representing Dents, talked to HM the Queen about modern design and also about Dents’ long involvement with the British royal family – Dents’ famous gloves date back to 1777 and Dents made the official Coronation Glove for both HM Queen Elizabeth and also her father King George VI.
John says it was a very relaxed event and it highlighted the talent and strength of the fashion industry here in Britain.

Charlize's Evening bag, how small is too small?
From Dents’ Design Team – Posted by Laura I just couldn’t help commenting on the decreasing size of evening bags – what exactly do you fit inside them? When I go out for an evening I’m carrying my keys, my lipstick, my purse and my mobile, and I usually need a small suitcase to carry my items! Maybe the answer is to have a partner with large enough pockets to carry everything for me instead … making me look even more dainty and petite with my tiny bag…..?

Leather gloves have always been perceived as a fashion accessory, but for some, a pair of gloves can make a fashion statement. There is no-one more iconic than Lady Gaga when it comes to fashion statements at the moment, as she most famously wore the ‘fire bra’ at the MuchMusic Video Awards in June of this year along with a string of extravagant outfits in her music videos. With a large following and by having regular coverage in the media, Lady Gaga has the ability to encourage others to express themselves in their choice of fashion. Despite Lady Gaga adopting new styles at each show, one thing remains constant throughout – wearing trendy gloves.
The self titled, “Fame Monster”, was pictured wearing what seems to be a pair of Dents leather gloves on two separate occasions. First, she wore the gloves at the DLD Star night in Munich in January (pictured above) and then was snapped by the paparazzi leaving a club accessorising a pink rubber skirt and rubber bustier number; obviously evident in the picture (left). Take a look at the Dents studded bow glove pictured below (a Dents original design) currently featured at Saks Fifth Avenue, New York.
Leather gloves seem to be the rage at the moment, with many celebrities being snapped wearing a pair. Beyonce Knowles, Jennifer Aniston, Rihanna, Natalie Portman and Leighton Meester (known for her role in ‘Gossip Girl’) have all be seen wearing leather gloves to either acclimatise to the weather, or to accessorise an outfit.
Lady Gaga has certainly brought fashion gloves to the fore of late. All four of her U.K. music videos have shown her wearing a range of gloves, and in many award shows and film festivals she has appeared as a cross between eccentric and elegant, as she has worn daring PVC along with designer leather gloves.
